In 1996, Sugarloaf Ridge State Park became the home of the largest observatory in the western United States which is completely dedicated to public viewing and education.. The park's family campground and picnic area lie in the meadow near Sonoma Creek at 1,200 feet elevation. Each of the 50 campsites has a table and fire ring.

Located in Kenwood, CA, Sugarloaf Ridge State Park features 46 individual sites for tents or RVs, 3 glamping sites, and a group site. The campground is open all year, and reservations are highly recommended during the peak season of April through October. A limited number of campsites will be available daily on a first-come, first-served basis.

Sugarloaf Ridge State Park is 13 miles east of Santa Rosa in the shadow of 2,275-foot Bald Mountain. Visitors to the park often set off on a self-guided nature trail along Sonoma Creek. After winter rains hikers are rewarded with views of a 25-foot waterfall. Numerous other trails for hikers and horseback riders wind through the park.
